ACHIM KÜCK

Who are you, and what do you do? What do you
like to do when you don't practice or play the piano?
My name is Achim Kück. I am 68, live near Hanover in Germany, and am retired. Previously, I was a music teacher at music schools and universities.

I taught jazz piano and theory/ear training and led big bands and combos for around 40 years.

I studied music for ten years (church music/jazz piano & composition/arrangement).

I am also a professional jazz pianist and arranger to this day.

When I'm not practicing or playing the piano, I exercise and am an enthusiastic grandfather of four grandchildren.

Why do you play jazz piano?
Achim has a grand piano in his room with various other gear.
My brothers started taking lessons when they were 10, and I (5) was able to imitate many things by ear, play, and try out many things from the beginning.
And I always had fun at the piano!

What is your practicing routine?
I currently start in the morning from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. with technical exercises: scales, arpeggios, patterns, chords, sight reading, and playing.

Other units follow throughout the day: CD - listening / transcription, learning & playing standards, etc. Follow everything a previously created daily plan with appropriate breaks.

I practice 35 hours a week for myself, rehearse live with other musicians, and now play concerts almost exclusively.

PopJazzOnline has systematized the logistics of practice through The Jazz Piano Step-by-Step Course.

Since I earned money early on in bands and did a lot of different musical things, I always had a lot of fun and didn't want to do anything else.

What tools and resources do you
use that help you practice better?
Music example
ALFIE with Gabriela Koch Trio. Well done, Achim!
What have been your biggest AHA moments or breakthroughs for your music?
A turning point for me was in the year 2000! After that, I didn't want to make entertainment or dance music anymore. I couldn't have endured it another day. Then I made a change.

Since I have already played on a number of CDs and the music business is changing a lot at the moment, I will only be composing, arranging, and playing live—and hopefully for a long time. These are my goals.

Achim practices 35 hours every week! That's impressive!
Thank you for participating!
